When Girl Meets Curls: Christa Dionne
Natural Again Since: February 2013
Birth Date: February 27
Christa: Because I love versatility I loved coloring my hair. Unfortunately the color damaged my hair so badly from coloring my hair over and over again. I decided that the health of my hair was more important to me. So I then decided to go natural.
Tiffany Nicole: Did you transition or BC “Big Chop”?
Christa: I did a big chop 3 times within the last 3 years! So many times I tried my best to stay natural, but would give in and relax my hair. Until my most recent BC, my hair was the biggest it had ever been natural, but I decided again to cut it. Realizing how much I missed my fro, I finally made up my mind and I wont turn back this time around!
Tiffany Nicole: What were your fears going in and how did you overcome them?
Christa: My fears were how I would look with a low cut since I decided to do a big chop instead of transition. I've had my hair cut short many times, but never natural. So I was very skeptical about how the short natural cut would look on me. On top of that, I was also a little hesitant because I wanted my husband to like it, and was wondering how he would feel about it.
Tiffany Nicole: What makes you happy with your decision?
Christa: I feel totally free to do what I want with it. I don't have to worry about chemicals damaging my hair, and I'm excited to be able to try different styles that I could never achieve when I was relaxed. Also I can do protective styling that will get me through the sometimes awkward moments.
Tiffany Nicole: What are some of your favorite hair products?
Christa: As far as my favorite products, I am still in the beginning stages of finding my staples. As of right now, I use Pantene Relaxed and Natural shampoo and conditioner and the Eco Styler Gel. I am looking to expand my product usage as my hair grows and my curls start to change and form.
Tiffany Nicole: What is your hair routine?
Christa: My hair routine is quite simple, because my hair is short, I do less and my hair is very low maintance. I usually just rock a wash and go on a daily basis. I wet my hair in the mornings, add some Eco Styler Gel, maybe twist some hair around my fingers and go. Then the next morning I pick it out and do it all over again.
Christa: Advice I would give to someone deciding to go natural is, that you won't go wrong with doing it. You'll have nothing to lose and lots more to gain! Whoever said we NEED a relaxer?? Embrace who you naturally are and just go with the flow, and watch how going natural can change your life!! Plus being a natural is fun!
Tiffany Nicole: Thank you Christa for sharing your story with us! You are truly an inspiration for those who are, have done or are contemplating doing the BC. Sharing your honest feelings about having short natural hair is really going to inspire someone. It takes a lot of guts and confidence to do the big chop and to rock a TWA (Teeny Weeny Afro). In my opinion, I think you wear short hair very well! Keep on with your journey, and don't forget to give us updates on the progress of your natural hair. We'd love to watch your growth!
