August 2013 - Natural of the Month: Summer

 Summer Alana

My name is Summer! I am a 33 year old Christian wife, mother and homemaker. I have a bachelors degree and right now, I'm enjoying being home. I've been married 1.5 months shy of 7 years! My hobbies are sports, sports and more sports. Then there is my love for music and being a caretaker for my loved one! In my spare time, I love to read all types of books and listen to various genres of music. I love to cook and have get togethers with people I love. I have one daughter who is 13. I have several nieces and a nephew who takes up a lot of my time and makes my life enjoyable.

LEI: What made you decide to go natural?
Summer: I felt I could do a better job in caring for my hair. The people I had paid to take care of my hair weren't doing a thorough enough job, I felt. My mom was already 1 year natural and she was a big motivation as well. My hair was always cut short because I was told it didn't grow long or fast, so I wanted to see if this was true.

LEI: Did you transition or big chop?
Summer: I don't know. I know your like what? I had braids for about 3 months before I decided to chop it off in December 2012. I only had 1.5" of hair so I don't think I really had a transitioning period.

LEI: What were your fears and how did you overcome them?

Summer: Initially, I feared I would look so different that I'd rather be unpretty! (Yes, crazy!) One of my relatives told me, "your face will not change, only your hair!" so that made a lot of sense to me. I feared I had took in so much information that I wouldn't know where to start in my journey, but I quickly learned to keep it simple. I'm thankful that these fears only lasted about a week or so.

LEI: Name some reasons why you are happy with your decision.

Summer: I am happy with my decision because I am now learning how to care for my own hair. No one can love your hair like you can. I no longer have to worry about whether or not my stylist is actually "caring" for my hair as his/her own. I have gained so much knowledge since I went natural. Knowledge is always power! The amount of support from the natural hair community is so empowering. It extends beyond our hair into taking great care of the overall self.

LEI: What are some of your favorite hair products?
Summer: I like the moisture retention by Shea Moisture. This was the first product line I tried when I went natural and I think it aided a lot in teaching my hair to retain moisture. I buy these products at my local Target store. I also like Ynobe Shop all natural and body products. My hair is super moisturized when I use their products. My favorite Ynobe Shop products are the silky shea cream, the marshmallow leave-in conditioner, the Ynobe Amla and nettle deep conditioner and flaxseed smoothie! I purchased these products online at Ynobeshop.com

LEI: What is your hair routine?Summer: Every week I wash my hair with Shea Moisture's retention shampoo, deep condition (sometimes overnight), and style which is normally a twist out because I get the greatest definition that way. On my wash days, I definitely use the LOC method as this helped my hair to retain moisture early in my hair journey. I normally do this process every Thursday (when I'm not wearing a protective style). Why Thursday? Because it gives my hair a chance to get old by the weekend, therefore, my weekend hair is Banging! LOL!

LEI: What advice would you give someone going natural?

Summer: The advice I would give is to be bold! As with any change, there is always some type of adversity, but the end results are greater! The changes in self-esteem and the new self awareness I have isn't comparable to anything I've ever experienced in my life!

LEI: How can we find more about you?
Summer: I tweet sometimes @summoore
I'm on Instagram, username is @summlikeithot

LEI: Summer, Summer, Summertime! Lol! Summer thank you so much for sharing your story with us! You are so beautiful, bright and cheery and your smile is like sunshine! You are such an inspiring woman. You inspire me! May the Lord continue to bless you and your family. Love. Embrace. Inspire.
