November 2013 - Natural of the Month: Tiffany

Tiffany Green

LEI: Introduce yourself:
Tiffany Green: My name is Tiffany and I'm from Chicago, Illinois. I'm currently residing in NW Ohio and am raising two little naturalistas. This choice to go natural has been the greatest decision for more than just myself...for my girls as well. If I can be their example of confidence, then I can help create in them a sense of pride when it comes to their own hair.

LEIWhat made you decide to go natural?
Tiffany Green: I honestly began this trip down natural lane a little over 3 years ago. I had been steadily relaxing my hair since age 5 and had recently gotten color. My hair started to get really thin and weak so I decided of try to grow out my relaxer to give my hair a chance to be healthier. So I decided in July 2010 I'd had my last relaxer and the rest is history!

LEI: Did you transition or BC "Big Chop"?
Tiffany Green: I transitioned for a short while then I big chopped. After my last relaxer, I was still going to the hair salon every week to have my roots blow-dried and flat-ironed out. I hadn't decided to sport my actual texture yet. After about 7 months, at the constant prodding and nudging of my sister and niece, I decided to just let the permed ends go!

LEI: What were your fears going in and how did you overcome them?
Tiffany Green: I was very afraid if I'm to be honest. I've always had at least shoulder length hair all my life so I couldn't imagine having hair so short. I actually felt that my identity was getting chopped off with my hair as shallow as that may sound.

LEI: Name some reasons why you are happy about your decision.
Tiffany Green: Now, two and a half years later, I'm so proud of myself for sticking with my decision. Being natural has boosted my confidence because I'm able totally express myself. It's funny because I get so much more attention now than I ever did with my relaxer. I get so many compliments and am asked so many questions about what type of products I use and methods I use to care for my hair. And most importantly, I'm setting a great example for my girls in that it's possible to be the bomb without a perm!

LEi: What are some of your favorite hair products? What is your hair routine?
Tiffany Green: I recently found a product combo that works for my hair. I used to product shop all the time, but since I've found my staples, I don't have to shop around anymore (whew!) Aubrey Organics mixed with Olive or jojoba oil is what I use to deep condition. Sometimes I leave it in overnight with a plastic cap and winter hat or if I'm  pressed for time, I'll sit under a hooded dryer for 30 minutes. I use Tresemm√© Nourishing Moisture conditioner to cowash. It doesn't leave my hair stripped and hard like other conditioners I've tried. After I've detangled, I'll put my hair in 8 twists. And wrap my hair in an old t shirt to absorb most on the water. Most times, I blow dry on a low setting to stretch my hair. Then I'll do a combo: a little diluted Kinky Kurly Knot Today, some Cantu Shea Butter Leave In Conditioning Cream and lastly Elasta QP Olive Oil & Mango Butter. Those three together are a dream for my hair.

LEI: What advice would you give someone considering going natural or who is new  to being a natural?
Tiffany Green: My best advice would be not to do hair comparisons. There are many natural girls out there with many different hair types and textures-none of which are like your own. Don't get caught up in 'why isn't my curl pattern looser ?' or 'why don't my results look like hers?' Everyone's hair is different and you have to learn what it likes to get the best out it.

LEI: List your social networking sites so we can connect with you further.
Tiffany Green: You can find me on IG...@Naturallyme_11 and Kik Stop by and say Hi!!
