Weekend DIY: Do It Yourself, Make Your Own Hair Products

June 14, 2014 | LOVE EMBRACE INSPIRE  | By Tiffany Nicole

Purchasing hair products can get costly after a while. Many women are discovering that they can use household ingredients to create their own products right in the comfort of their home. If you look on the labels of lots of these natural hair company's products, you'll realize that many of those ingredients are already in your pantry, if not, they are easily accessible. Only thing left to do know is decide what you want to make and the purpose behind each product. Check out below how you can use the four easily accessible ingredients (olive oil, coconut oil, aloe vera gel and shea butter).

1). Pre-poo (Before Shampooing)
  • Coconut Oil
  • Olive Oil
Apply one or both of these natural oils to dry hair, cover with a shower cap or wrap and leave it in overnight. This is thought to help reduce hygral fatigue of the hair.

2). Curl Detangler
  • 4 tbsp Olive Oil
  • 4 tbsp Coconut Oil
  • 2 tbsp Melted Shea Butter
Apply this mixture to dry or damp hair. Let it sit in your hair for about 10 minutes and start to detangle either using your fingers or by using a detangling brush or comb.
3). Deep Conditioner and/or Leave - In Conditioner
  • Aloe Vera Gel
  • Coconut or Olive Oil
After shampooing your hair, apply this mixture together. For a deep condition, leave in your hair for 20 minutes then rinse out. For a leave-in condition and styling, add this formula to your twistouts, braidouts, or bantu knot outs. If you are going to do a roller set, apply this formula to your hair prior to putting in the rollers and sit under the dryer until its dry.

4). Moisturizing Mist Spray
  • Water
  • Aloe Vera Gel
In a spray bottle, mix these two ingredients together and shake well before applying. Spray this moisturizing mist on hair when its dry and watch your hair come back to life! To prolong the self life of this mist, be sure to keep it refrigerated when not in use,

5). Curl Definition Cream
  • 5tbsp Aloe Vera Gel
  • 2tbsp Olive or Coconut Oil
  • 3tbsp Slightly Melted Shea Butter
Mix these ingredients together and apply to wet hair for curl definition for wash n' gos or as a setting cream for twist, braid or knot outs.

These are the brands that I like to use:

Bertoli- 100% Extra Virgin Olive Oil (EVOO)
Taha - 100% African Shea Butter
Fruit of the Earth- 100% Aloe Vera Gel
Nature's Way EfaGold- Pure Coconut Oil
