LEI Style Crush: Chinelo

September 10, 2014 | LOVE EMBRACE INSPIRE  | LEI Style Crush

My name is Chinelo. I'm the wife of a wonderful man of God, and the mother of two adorable toddlers (ages 2 and 4). I am a pediatric nurse by profession, and a fashion designer by Divine direction.

LEI Lady Mag: Your style is fabulous, we want to know, what is your style philosophy?
Chinelo: Thank you! My philosophy is simple: If it looks good on me, I wear it.
P.s.: If my hubby thinks it looks good on me (he usually does!), even better!

LEI Lady Mag: How would you describe your sense of style?
Chinelo: I like to think my style is eclectic but I tend to lean towards an Afro-chic look. However, there are days when I'm justing hang around the house with my kids, and you'll find me in a T-shirt and jeans.

LEI Lady Mag: Where do you pull inspiration from?
Chinelo: I like simple classic pieces, such as pencil skirts, sheath dresses and tailored jackets. At the same time, I love bright colors. So, I usually sew my outfits with those two in mind. I like using Ankara (African print fabric). The prints are vibrant enough tone up to simple pieces.

LEI Lady Mag: What is your technique in putting outfits together?
Chinelo: I usually start with a statement piece, and work my way from there. But it really depends on where I'm going or what I'll be doing that day. Almost always, it involves my kids, so I always think comfort and functionality. For a casual look, I could start with a bright colored pair of Ankara shorts, add a plain tank and some shoes and be out of the door. If I'm going to church, my look will be a lot more formal/dressy, but I teach the children's Sunday School at my church, so I still have to be comfortable. Heels are a must, though. My 2-year-old son has made me master the art of running in heels. Now, I'm used to it!

LEI Lady Mag: Summer is over and Fall is here, what are your top must haves for this season?
Chinelo: A fitted blazer and wide legged pants! I mentioned those because I don't have them and I really want them. Scratch that. I need them! Now, I'm off to my sewing machine I go! Lol!

LEI Lady Mag: What pieces are you looking forward to wearing this season?
Chinelo: I don't usually follow trends. Like I said, if it looks good on me, I'll wear it, but I'm looking forward to experimenting more, and thinking outside the box with my wardrobe creativity. I might be trying my hands on lace, plaid, leather (I've never owned a leather jacket!), and perhaps gingham. We'll see how that goes.

LEI Lady Mag: What are some of your favorite accessories?
Chinelo: Large Ankara button earrings! My friend and fellow blogger makes them and I just can't get enough! Even if I'm not dressed up or going anywhere fancy, I'll throw them on if I'm going grocery shopping or to Bible Study. They instantly spice up any outfit! You can check out her Instagram page and Etsy store (The African Fascinator) for other Ankara accessories.

LEI Lady Mag: Name some of your favorite places to shop?
Chinelo: One of the perks of being a designer is that I make the majority of my clothes myself. So, most of my favorite places to shop are fabric stores. However, when I do shop for clothes, I go to affordable places like Burlington, Ross, or even thrift stores. As for shoes, I like to shop online at Shoe Dazzle and Charlotte Russe.
LEI Lady Mag: What's your advice for ladies who are developing their style sense?
Chinelo: "Self confidence is the best outfit. Rock it. Own it."
You don't have to be wearing designer labels to look good. Not that there's anything wrong with designer labels, but if you can't afford it, work with what you have and make the most of it. Remember that your worth is far more than rubies (Proverbs 31:10). Walk with your head held high. Be bold. Be you.
