The month of November is diabetes awareness and unlike Breast Cancer and so on, you don't hear about it much. Diabetes which is also called Diabetes Mellitus is a metabolic disease in which the body's inability to produce any or enough insulin causes elevated levels of glucose in the blood. Most people don't understand what diabetes is what you can do to prevent it. First of all, our pancreas makes insulin and the role of the insulin is to move glucose (sugar) from the bloodstream into the muscle, fat and liver cells, where it can be stored or used as fuel. Some people with diabetes have high blood sugar because their body cannot move (sugar) glucose from the blood in the muscle to burn or store energy and because their liver makes too much glucose and releases it into the blood.
There are three types of diabetes, diabetes type 1 which occurs at any age, most often in children, teens and young adults. In this type, the body makes little to no insulin because the pancreas cells that makes insulin stops working. People with type 1 takes daily injections of insulin.
Type 2 diabetes much more common, often occurs mostly in adulthood, age 40 and older but because of high obesity rates, teens and young adults are now being diagnosed with the disease. They can use medications, exercise and a healthy diet to control this type of diabetes. Gestational diabetes only occurs in pregnant women and is the least common.
You can have a urine test or fasting blood glucose test to check to see if you have the disease. Where you cannot prevent type 1 diabetes, you can prevent type 1 by controlling your body weight and an active lifestyle. For those of you who don't know, a normal glucose level range from 70-120 and anything below or above that, you will need to speak with you family doctor and get checked. If diabetes is also in you family, you stand a chance of getting it, so know your family history.
