November 2014 - Natural of the Month: Tori
My name is Tori. I was born and raised in Jamaica, but I am now living in Dallas, Texas working as a Registered Nurse. When I’m not working, I enjoy spending time with my family, working out, and reading.
Tori: My initial goal was to have healthier relaxed hair. So in the beginning of my hair journey, going natural never really crossed my mind. However, as I would wait longer periods of time in between relaxers, I began falling in love with my new growth. I was also later diagnosed with Alopecia Areata, which also influenced my decision to go natural.
LEI Lady Mag: Did you transition or "Big Chop"? What was that process like for you?
Tori I transitioned for a year and a half, then chopped off my relaxed ends in Jan. 2012. So I have a little over 4 years of natural hair growth.
LEI Lady Mag: Did you have any fears or were you fearless? If apprehensive, how did you overcome your fears?
Tori The only fear I had was having to wear my hair super short, which is why I decided to transition for as long as I could before cutting off my relaxed ends. Otherwise, I didn’t have any fears of being natural.
Tori Since going natural, my hair is longer, thicker, and healthier than it has ever been in my life. I definitely think I was doing my hair an injustice by allowing it to get so damaged from relaxers. I also think in some ways going natural has allowed me to be more sociable. People who may have questions about my hair do occasionally approach me in public. And, while the introvert in me would rather not talk to strangers (lol), because of my hair/hair journey I am forced to socialize more both in person and via social media.
LEI Lady Mag: What do you love most about your hair?
Tori I love everything to be honest- the thickness, versatility, shape, health, etc.
LEI Lady Mag: What are some of your favorite hair products?
Tori I do love Shea Moisture and Camille Rose Naturals products, particularly the Camille Rose Almond Jai Twisting Butter and several of the Shea moisture shampoos and conditioners. I also love Tresemme Naturals conditioners.
LEI Lady Mag: What is your hair routine?
Tori: I try to keep things really simple. I shampoo and deep condition my hair weekly (or every two weeks if life gets busy). I do special conditioning treatments as needed (sometimes monthly or every couple months). Special conditioning treatments include protein treatments, clay mixes, etc. I moisturize my hair once or twice a week. And, I will occasionally co-wash if my hair needs a midweek refresher.
LEI Lady Mag: What advice would you give someone considering going natural or who is new to being a natural?
Tori Deciding to wear your hair natural requires mental preparation, especially if you have had relaxed hair for a while. Once you decide to make the change, just do you research and then go for it. It may be new, different, and even shocking at first, but over time you will grow to appreciate the decision you made to go natural. Also, for new naturals, the top things to remember are:
· Keep things simple.
· Find what works for you and stick with it
· Don’t try to do what everyone else is doing- this is YOUR journey
· Enjoy the journey
· Don’t allow yourself to get frustrated and don’t give up
